Those familiar with the world of energy-efficient modes of transport might be pretty well-versed with the Turanor PlanetSolar, better known as the world’s largest fully solar-powered boat. Known for using a shocking number of solar panels propped up on its deck that soak in the sun and power up this mammoth vessel, the PlanetSolar is a Swiss Government-sponsored 35-meter (115-foot) catamaran and recently showed off its capabilities and potential in New York.
After having circumnavigated the earth, powered solely by solar energy, the Turanor PlanetSolar now shines as an example to the shipping industry, with 60,000 kilometers and a 584 day journey juiced by the sun to its credit! Weighing in at 90 tons, the PlanetSolar vessel travels at speeds of up to 5 knots.
