Spy planes, we’ve all loved them, drawn them and watched them in awe, zipping by in Hollywood flicks. An American company seems to have been breathing life into these boyish dreams off-late and has come up with the SR-72 Unmanned Spy Plane, the future of aerial defense and, well, spying. SR-72 hypersonic plane will use a turbine-ramjet engine and will touch speeds of 3,600mph, fast enough to make onlookers say “blimey”.
For now, the SR-72 stays a concept in development and this supersonic craft won’t begin flying too soon. The plane isn’t scheduled to roll out onto the runway till 2030. “Hypersonic aircraft, coupled with hypersonic missiles, could penetrate denied airspace and strike at nearly any location across a continent in less than an hour,” says Brad Leland, Lockheed Martin program manager, Hypersonics. With this, the future looks bright, and somewhat frightening.
