Let’s be honest. If you’ve watched Back to the Future II, you’ve probably have wished with all your heart to ride around town on Marty McFly’s hoverboard. While that might not be completely real for now, developer Kieran Lord did manage to nearly do so with the Oculus Rift and a Wii Balance Board! Lord’s board cannot be ridden to the grocery store but users can enjoy hours of virtual hovering on it.
Quoting one of Lord’s comments about the project on Reddit, “The way I’m imagining the hoverboard physics is slightly different to the BTTF maglev skateboard. It’s more a snowboard with a ‘virtual slope’ of the front/back angle of the board. If that works and feels good the player could just get up a ton of speed and then stomp their back foot to get the same effect as going over a jump ramp.” We love this combination of the Oculus Rift and the Wii Balance Board and will stick to it for now, until someone finally unleashes a real hoverboard.
