How can a city’s streets be revamped in the best possible way? Not by building new concrete cement roads or strutting new buildings but by the simple means of rebranding bus stops. This concept seemed almost idyllic when we heard of the Big Blue Bus architectural and branding package to thump the city of Santa Monica in USA. The project was first announced in June when it was awarded to Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects and Bruce Mau Design. According to Mau, the Bus stops would serve as a flexible branding for the city and are going to be evident in 360 bus stops around the city. The stops are very different from the conventional open-faced sheds that we find everywhere.
The bus stops in Santa Monica will be customised according to the sunny climatic conditions of the city featuring canopies that maximize shade where the sunlight falls. They can also be reconfigured to each street corner, by arranging them in either diagonal or horizontal orientation, on different roads and corners. The first stops in the city are going to spring up by the year end.
