Extrusions by Thomas Heatherwick
Thomas Heatherwick is presenting his unique collection titled Extrusions, at Haunch of Venison London this autumn. The exhibition features six extruded, mirror polished, aluminum benches made without fixtures or fittings, which have been produced by the world’s largest extrusion machine. Heatherwick’s Extrusions series is produced using the world’s largest extrusion machine, with each piece consisting of a single piece of aluminum polished for 300 hours to achieve a mirror finish. Heatherwick Studio custom-built a specially designed die through which aluminum was ‘squeezed’ into a chair profile, complete with legs, seat and back. 18 years in the making, this project uses the same technology used in aerospace industry to produce the world’s largest ever extruded piece of metal. It is also the first limited edition work to be exhibited by Thomas Heatherwick. Each piece is unique and creates a dramatic effect. What is more, all these pieces are the early prototypes for a final outdoor installation – a 100 meter-long piece that tangles into an extraordinary form, which will be constructed and exhibited in 2010.
The world’s first single component of metal furniture, extruded by machine, this exhibit will surely take your breath away. The exhibition is on till 7th November.
