Many designers have come up with unique mobile homes for the homeless. Paul Elkins is the latest designer to offer his solution for a shelter for the homeless. His creation, a mobile homeless shelter was designed as part of a competition asking individuals to meet the demands of the rapidly growing homeless society. Elkins wanted his creation to be lightweight, water tight insulated box on wheels, built with an area for displaying and selling handmade wares. His mobile home, weighs just 225 pounds and its roof functions as rain catcher. When it starts to rain, a valve is turned to stop the flow of water to the collection tank to allow debris to be flushed from the roof. After the cleaning process, the valve can be turned back on and collect free water. An overflow feature on the tank allows excess water to drain to the ground. The shelter comprises of a compact sleeping area, kitchen and makeshift washroom. The mobile home resembles a shopping cart, featuring four wheels on the base and a handle on top that allows its owner to move the compact home around.
With clever storage space also included, this mobile home is sure to be loved by the homeless.
