Pod Modular Lighting

pod.jpg Like a creeper growing on your wall and creating an intrinsic pattern, the Pod Modular Lighting glows and grows on you. Designed by Amanda Leppi, the lighting was inspired by biomimcry and was developed from the beach pea. The laser cut forms allow an illuminated 'pod' to be placed in various locations. Versatile and alluring, this one tree light that you would want to grow on your wall.

And God said…let there be light, and there was Lamp'

lamp03.jpg If the Torch Lamp was brilliant, then the Lamp' is perfection. Similar in though but different in perception, it's really difficult to pick the better of the two. For the moment lets harp about Julien's Lamp'; It's a simple lamp that looks artistically opulent and is the kind that would look visually appealing both in the living room of a bachelor or a Prima Donna's dresser. Revealing all yet hiding some, this portable lamp is your guiding light when you want to tiptoe into the kitchen to catch the last slice of cake, when all are asleep. A twist at the golden ring and the place gets bathed in light!

Martini, Snifter and Old fashion lamps by Billy May

todd_bracher_lamps_1.jpg The perfect way to hide flaws of a room is shift focus from the imperative to something more defining like the lights and the flooring. This way you can easy camouflage the imperfection and show-off the obvious. While working for the Todd Bracher Studio in Brooklyn, Billy May did some interesting work with lights. As he rightly points out, the main issue while designing the lamps was to come up with an efficient way of dispersing light. One idea toyed with, was similar to the Castiglioni Taccia lamp (seen in the 'martini' variation), which places the lamp in the foot of the light and reflect the light down from a domed reflector on top. The Snifter and Old fashion lamp take the functional route by opting for frosted glass diffusers..

Mr. Orchestra- the Lotus light that responds to sound

light 1.jpg Mesmerizing you with its intrinsic light patterns, Mr. Orchestra is a light that responds to the level of music and sound around it and shows the patterns of light moving accordingly. Looking like a lotus bloom, this interactive lighting system displays patterns of lights in beat to the music. In quite places (where the sound is below 60 decibels) it can be used as a proper light. Above this sound cut-off, the lights play a psychedelic pattern thanks to the sensors, which detect the noise via the built-in microphone.

Tea lights get redundant, go for Coffee lights instead

cup_light_chandelier.jpg Yes, tea-lights are redundant, they have been effectively been replaced with the Coffee Cups chandelier. Designed by Robert Lucas, it's an idea that appeals to most java drinkers. He's simply put together about a dozen or so cups, out of which only 6 hold the light bulbs, and voila! It's a designer masterpiece chandelier. More affordable that the Belgian counterparts, the Coffee Cups chandelier is made from ceramic and iron, replacing charismatic crystal and aplomb!

Monolith stands tall and glows

monolith_1.jpg David Gonçalves calls the Monolith an articulated table/floor lamp. Its been inspired by the 2001 Space Odyssey movie and I can very well see why. The lamp goes from compact to an extension quite smoothly, and reveals a glowing tube that lights up your room. The sleek tubular form emits light even when the extension is closed. As a floor lamp, it looks to be the ideal height and unless David plans a smaller version I think its best to keep The Monolith away from the table.

Cozy in Gray Lamp

lampsss.jpg This is one of those designs that you feel demand a better explanation, but sadly you get none. Designed by Harri Koskinen, the Cozy in Gray Lamp looks sweet and fit enough for any bedside shade or table. Fashioned out of blown glass and color elements, this simple lamp is an elegant design.

TSUBOMI a Flower Bud that illuminates

TSUBOMI.jpg Have you heard the story of the wicked witch who asked a girl to bring fire wrapped in paper in order to gain freedom? The clever girl brought the witch a paper lamp with a candle burning in bright. Similar to this oriental lore is the TSUBOMI, a Flower Bud lamp that has a paper exterior. The lamp pushes the shreds of paper upwards to reveal the glowing embers. A very soothing concept envisaged by Keniti Tanaka that will look alluring in any setting.

Glow Balls; do have the courage to light them?

glow_balls_1.jpg I must admit that designer Ashish Chaudhary is taking a risk here. His previous Kilo Light is very tame in comparison to the Glowballs. Yes, the male privates inspire them, but Ashish has a very logical explanation for this inspiration. He feels that we are all ignorant towards serious issues in life like Global Warming etc. Like the Balls of a man, which are a symbol of his arrogance and the root cause of all problems, we too are ignoring the real threats due to our delusions. Bravo!

LED Egg Lights, can't wait for 'em to disco and hatch!

egg_lights_1.jpg I really would love to know what inspired Igor Pinigin to design these LED Egg Lights. More than quirky, I'm amused at the concept of egg cartons hodling oblong lights. I can picture Farmer Mac holding these eggs to a light…wait a minute, the lights in them! No hatchlings Farmer Mac…only LED lights that assumes your hen's clutch! Freaky disco-licious fun!

Light-weight in kilos is a heavy concept

floor_lamp_1.jpg Designer Ashish Chaudhary brings a very Indian-ness to this floor lamp. It's based on the very common measure found at almost every vegetable, grocer or vendor. Although the actual weight measures come in various denominations: 50gms, 100gms, 1 kilo, 5 kilo etc. Ashish has stuck to 3 sizes 100g-small, 500g-medium, and 1Kg-large. Contemporary and realistic, this is one measure I wouldn't mind having around at home!

SofRay Light Emitting Bouquet

sofray_light_1.jpg Do you remember the receptionist in the movie Monsters Inc., I think her name was Celia. She wore a bunch of Rattlesnakes for her hair, and believe you me, this bouquet of lights just reminds me of that! Designed by Andrea Putaggio, the lamp looks quite cute. The stems are flexible so you can arrange the installation the way you like. More designs by Andrea after the jump.

Shadow puppet lamp by Jason Cooper

lamp1.jpg Although he has christened it CeeJay, the Shadow puppet lamp by Jason Cooper reminds me of the fun times that my kids and I have making silhouettes on the walls on dark nights. The design also looks like it also took some inspiration from the Malay style of telling stories through shadow-dolls. Intended for 12 to 20 year olds, CeeJay uses black cardboard cutout silhouettes that users can themselves make or download from the Internet. I really want one of these, as they will look cool in the kid's room.

Suspension Lamps balance with panache

suspension_lamps_1.jpg You can always find fancy designs that house the light bulb, but tube lights are always conformed to the rigid industrial designs or are simply concealed in POP shafts. Designer Nuno Teixeira has taken a different approach and decided to use a bit of Physics in the designing of the Suspension Lamps. Made from high-density polyurethane with a high gloss paint finish, the lamps are simply artistic. The balance is made possible by placing a solid counter weight in one end that equals to the rest of the lamp. This acrobatic lamp will make an interesting ceiling piece, a departure from the antiquated chandeliers.

Thanks Nuno

Anger Management tip of the day: Punch the L!ghting

punching_bag_1.jpg Frustration levels run quite high when one is stressed. The biggest relief comes when you punch something hard and release all the tensions. The only repercussion is that your knuckles take a beating and you are sore all over again. As a child I remember owing a punching inflatable joker, which had a funny-squeaky nose. You punched it hard on the nose and it would squeak and dip over to the other side. It bought out peals of laughter amongst my friends and me. Taking a similar stance is the punching light by designers Jun Bum Park and Kim Jin Sook. Based on the mantra Slow is Stress+Low, the bag lights up every time you knock in a blow. A really cool design that could bring about much relief amongst stressed out people.
