An architect’s dream is to build a community that thrives on the essence of space and can still communicate and interact with other members of the society. People living in ultra modern setups, have notions of exclusivity and connectivity with the environment that surrounds them. Unfortunately, such expansive housings can be experienced only in rural locations, because urban housings only have one way to grow that is upwards. The Vertical Surface Communities designed by Jan Lim takes on the challenges of urban housing in the Asian continent where space is at a premium that most commoners cannot afford.

As the designer conceives it, the VSC is divided into 5 stories, breaking down the massiveness of the 70-story structure. The floor plan is divided in such a way, that each community gets individual space, plus gets to communicate with the others within the complex. Smaller neighborhoods become a part of greater whole, through the exoskeleton structural circulation X-structure, which join one section to the other. This seemingly complex design facilitates movement from one plane to another through the interior connectivity as well as the exterior braces.
