We have come across quite a few interesting mobile home concepts, but they’re mostly been intended to sit on the well-versed terrain. Designer Joanna Borek Clement however, decided to ‘test the waters’ as a new location for her Tafoni floating home which has been specifically designed for the houseboat district of Sausalito, California. The sculptural, tafoni-inspired exterior and interior feature walls divide the space into three major parts: kitchen, living area and bedroom/bathroom/closet area. The mid-part houses a fully glazed sunroom that contains the kitchen, dining area and the main entrance to the boat. The front and back park of the house boat is occupied by the living room and bedroom respectively, both of which overlook the bay framed by Tafoni-shaped windows.
The houseboat is framed by modular repetitive ellipsoidal wooden trusses that can be mass-produced to conserve resources and energy. The ellipsoidal shape of the structures eliminates the need for walls and columns as they allow for a large spanning capacity. The concept is minimal and simple, with quality interior space, but it will still take some time to win the confidence of people in the idea of a houseboat.
