ATMs though extremely convenient banking solutions that the world relies on constantly today, are energy suckers unlike any other. Given the fact that these more often than not are lit up 24 hours a day with the air conditioning systems running ad infinitum, ATM machines do cause a substantial strain on the grid. Brazilian designers Edra Equipamentos has come up with a one-of-a-kind “Contemporary Bank Project” that includes an energy efficient ATM. Using solar panels to power up its LED lighting through the night, this eco-friendly ATM uses a clear “Solatube” system coated with a 3M film that keeps out nearly 80% of the infrared rays, keeping the kiosk cool and pleasant. Costing $300,000, this concept however could prove to be profitable in the long run.
