Kate Rider’s Dish-shaped Mariposa Chair

Mariposa_chair.jpg Ebony meets Ivory in the design by Kate Rider, a recent graduate of the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. He tries to amalgamate the feminine craft of laces and the metallic masculinity in his new design of a chair. The chair, available in dark wood and white colors is dish-shaped which personifies comfort while sitting in it. Also the work done is very delicate and artistic which I’m sure will add to the value of your room. This piece is a must have for every balcony, terrace or even a beach area!

Ana Chillida’s ‘Glow as you Grow’ Planter

planting_lamp.jpg As proven, plants have life too. So now you can let them see the light around them with Ana Chillida’s new concept named as ‘Planting Lamps’ wherein you can light a lamp or a bulb between a plant. As in you can grow a plant around a bulb socket. I think it’s a very innovative idea. Imagine lining your lawn with such lighted plants in the night. And walking down that aisle won’t look less than a fairytale dream-like sequence. This can also be used as an indoor plant, and you won’t even require separate lamp shades for your room.

Juhasz Adam’s Salt, Pepper Shaker: Slim is In!

Salt_Pepper_Shaker.jpg Slim is definitely in and happening. Every new design becomes obsolete some day and we must be open to embrace change positively. There have been loads of salt and pepper shaker designs in the past that have caught the fancy of many for many years. But designer Juhasz Adam has revolutionized the ordinary fat and stout shakers by making them slim, long and of steel. This design, as you can see, is an ordinary concept- a salt, pepper, red pepper shaker, but packaged in oodles of style. Nor would it occupy much space on your dining table, nor will it look like what it actually is. A must have for every modern-day dining table that wishes to defy convention.

Inflatable furniture where you’d just want to sink in!

Inflatable_furniture.jpg This sure does look yummy apart from looking like a kids’ inflatable jumping play area. Well it is that but it is not also! Having won the 5th prize in the International Design Award, this concept has appealed to many, including me. It is an inflatable seating area, which is the ideal place to sink in and relax at the end of a hard day. The case contains many interlinked cells, which gets filled with air, when blown air into with a pump. You can manually change the links between each cover as well. There have been other structures apart from this honey-comb shape like an orange, leaves, butterfly etc. I would love to have this piece of furniture that can be inflated when required and folded and kept inside when otherwise.

A Triple-Flow water faucet by Zaha Hadid

Triflow_Faucet.jpg There was something new this year at the London Design Festival. It was a ‘tri-flow tap’ by Zaha Hadid. Being an extremely distinctive design, the concept made almost all heads turn. While, this was not something that was thought of before, Zaha Hadid explored the untreaded path. His three way tap allowed treated drinking water to flow from one faucet and hot and cold water from the other two. The design was such that it consumed very less space and it looked like a designer piece. All that is required to be done is press the tri-flow loge to get treated water, while the other two were controlled by a handle. It indeed is a nice way to differentiate, and to promote the logo. And the look of it, gets straight A’s from me! I would definitely love to have this in my kitchen.

CoJoy: Concept bicycle for two

CoJoy.jpg The CoJoy is a unique concept bicycle for two designed by Pengtao Yu. The design for this unique bike is inspired by a paddle boat and a wheel chair. Each rider has to control one wheel. What is more, the bicycle will also test your co-ordination as only when the two riders ride with the same speed will the CoJoy move straight. When you have to turn the CoJoy, the outside rider will have to ride faster than the inside rider. A great concept, not only will it help you form and develop a unique co-ordination and communication with your co rider it will also give the two of you a great work out.

Shao-Lun Chao’s portable coffee maker

Portable_Barista.jpg Press the beans, brew your coffee and heat it all in the same flask and use it even while you go trekking. This is the all new coffee maker design launched by Shao-Lun Chao that is a one stop shop for all your coffee making woes. When you’re out, it indeed gets tough to brew espresso as it involves many a stages from pressing the beans to making it. But this all-in-one unit also has a little flame at the base of the unit which can be lit up to be able to brew that cuppa. It also stores the surplus. And it looks amazing.

Stylish Maglev Washing Machine by Jakub Lekes

Maglev-Washing-Machine-1.jpg I’d be lying if I said I care only about performance and not looks when it comes to household appliances. I mean, who wouldn’t want a stylish looking washing machine? The concept Maglev Washing Machine designed by Jakub Lekes is sure to bowl you over with its looks and features. The traditional spinning drum is replaced by a spherical drum held in place by a series of electromagnets in the Maglev. One set of electromagnets keeps the drum levitating within the body of the machine, while a second set induces movement, allowing the drum to spin in all directions. A lot of noise is reduced as the drum never actually contacts the body. The design also cuts water and detergent usage.

i-Scoob: Luxury snowmobile concept

i-Scoob_luxury_snowmobile_1.jpg If luxury is your top priority when it comes to a snowmobile, the concept i-Scoob (name is a play on the words-ice cube) snowmobile will definitely appeal to you. This snowmobile is a diseno-art.com design proposal for a luxury two-person. The luxury mobile can be used for a number of purposes including daily transportation in snow clad regions or as a way to quickly transport people and equipment over the arctic tundra during scientific exploration. The drivetrain of the i-Scoob consists of a hybrid internal combustion engine/electric motor setup that helps to drive the vehicle in a purely electric-mode over shorter distances reducing the impact on the arctic environment. The batteries can be charged in 3 diff ways- by the engine, by plugging into an electricity socket or by using the fold-out solar panels which are kept in storage boxes either side of the vehicle.

Crushed paper design for Bin Bin waste basket

Crushed_paper_bin.jpg This is a really nice concept. It is a waste basket called Bin Bin and looks like crushed paper. It looks exactly like the contents it is designed to contain – like crushed paper for a waste basket or a tissue holder and so on. The stuff is made of hard polyethylene. While making the design and to create this particular look, over 500 small models were created by crumpling paper then unfolding it, until its shape resembled the desire bin. So the products now have been evolved into Mini Bin Bin, Pen Pen (pencil holder) and Wipy (a tissue box).

A light and sturdy bed by Trellis

bed.jpg A dream bed! At last Trellis brings us a dream bed which is as light as a chair. Hard to believe, but true. As there are no tools on it, shear-minimizing lap joints and tension cables create a strong frame it is so light that it can be even lifted by a child. It can be assembled and disammembled without any hassle. The best part is that it provides a lot of storage, which is required, because of small apartments today. What more can the lady of the house ask for? She does not need anybody’s help to assemble or disassemble it. It is extremely portable. The frame comes in ash, maple or oak depending on your choice. All women would love to own it as it makes them less dependent on others.
