Shanghai Corporate Pavilion: An eco friendly entry for the World Expo 2009

Shanghai-corporate-pavilion.jpg If you are an environmentalist or have a keen eye for design, you will surely appreciate the architectural wonder that is the Shanghai Corporate Pavilion. Designed by Atelier Feichang Jianzhu, it is one of the hopeful designs to enter in the World Expo 2010 in China. What is impressive about this piece and what we think is one feature that will give it an edge above others is the fact that this pavilion building is composed of thousands of plastic tubes made from used CD cases. A green building, its exterior structure is composed of hundreds of polycarbonate transparent recycled plastic tubes formed into a grid-like matrix. Recycled from used CD cases, the polycarbonate tubes will be able to be recycled again at the end of the building’s life. Multi-colored LED’s will be fitted in the exterior and will be controlled by a computer to light up and give the building a unique appearance.

R22 Rifle concept by Darren Powless

R22_Rifle.jpg Not all designers are interested in designing daily appliances or creating unique sculptures. There are some who like to contribute to the protection of the nation by designing powerful weapons. One such designer is Darren Powless who hopes to help our soldiers with his concept R22 Rifle design. His aim was to pack enough firepower in a small punch that would allow soldiers to easily maneuver and use the weapon. Thus he narrowed down on a standard assault rifle with a basic carbine stock to realize his goal. His main plans for the R22 include a rifle that can perform multiple tasks like shooting, cutting open doors, equip grenade launchers and even a liquid nitrogen torch. A great idea, if it helps our soldiers I am all for it.

Slim&Strong Lamp by Delphine Frey

Slim&Strong_Lamp.jpg Design students these days are breaking all norms and treading unchartered territories to create some of the most unique designs with the most extraordinary materials. The Slim&Strong is a beautiful product of such an endeavor by design graduate Delphine Frey who pursued a Mas Luxe diploma at ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) in Switzerland. Slim&Strong is a unique desk lamp or console lamp made from carbon fiber. According to Frey, this lamp was born from the association of two different universes; the softness and elegance of the haute couture pleat meet the rigidity of carbon. This object represents the encounter of an ancestral know-how with the latest technology. The pleats are not only esthetical; but they also hide the leds and add rigidity to the structure. A beautiful creation, Frey has definitely created a functional design masterpiece with the Slim&Strong lamp.

Hubless Clock by Petter Knudsen

Hubless_Clock.jpg Hubless is a unique concept clock designed by Petter Knudsen. At first glance, you will definitely not believe that the Hubless is actually a clock. The Hubless Clock gives up the typical rotating hands for smaller nub type boxes that rotate around the exterior of the circle. This creates a floating hand effect without the center radiating clock arms. A great design, the simple and minimalistic approach is what impresses me. A far cry from the traditional clock designs, the Hubless is unique, aesthetic and simply marvelous.

Electrolux Design Lab 2009 rolls out top eight finalists – Care to vote?

electrolux.jpg Innovative designs and concepts help us to chart a better picture of our future. Since we have thousands of such projects floating all over blogoshpere, Electrolux invited entries for home appliance ideas for the next 90 years, in honor of the Electrolux 90-year anniversary. Out of 900 submissions from 50 countries, only eight finalists are shortlisted. Themed “Designs for the next 90 years”, the aim was to create thoughtfully-designed products that will shape how people prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes over the next nine decade. Since living green is the need of the hour, most of the designs are shaped for eco-friendly existence in the future. Every design is simply out-of-this-world and reading about them motivates me to hop on the time machine and fast forward to 90 years from today. Most of them revolve around water conservation but the one that caught my fancy the most is the Teleport Fridge by Dulyawat Wongnawa, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. His concept, “Teleport Fridge”, teleports food, eliminating the time and distance a person has to travel to buy fresh groceries or products from a store or farm. Using touch-screen technology as the interface for the teleportation process, the Teleport Fridge simply teleports food to compartments in its refrigeration and freezer units. Such a futuristic system can help to reduce or eliminate carbon footprints.
