That’s the beauty of designing - you can make an entire virtual world and bring your imagination to life through all sorts of drawings, graphics etc. you will know why when you see these pictures and read about this project – Russian Sochi. These are artificial islands and buildings that will be erect on the Black Sea in just a few years according to designers A.Asadov architectural studio. It has five parts - Pier-Hotel, Catamaran, Sea-Star, Olympic Island and Southern Outpost. There is a lot of reclamation planned and they will be making a heaven on earth, quite literally by the looks of it. The biggest of all these will be the Olympic island which will have five-circled platforms tied to one another with pedestrian over passes and highway bridges. The five platforms will represent five continents – Asia, Europe, America, Australia and Africa.

Alien Lamp and Human Table: Retro and futuristic pieces by Dzmitry Samal

He believes that the future for design is a combination of past experience and heritage which is carefully combined with today’s advanced technology. This is exactly what will be depicted in his latest creations which he created at his Paris based design studio. The two new designs the, the Alien Lamp and the Human Table are slated to go into production by September 2009. The Alien Lamp is a floor lamp realized in natural or painted poplar plywood floor with a simple continuous shape and a characteristic profile. Made from a strong light weight material known as Poplar plywood, this lamp is highly resistant to cracking, breaking, shrinkage, twisting and warping. The Human Table on the other hand is inspired by human beauty and sensuality. The table boasts of two human forms which appear to be four male legs which support the table top. Made from soft plastic with metal structure inside for support, this table is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Infinity shelf system is never ending

Yacht concepts by Sylvian Viau of SV design

magam01.jpg This is a couple of yacht concepts. Super S yacht that is made for speeeeed and that looks extremely futuristic and also a lot like a submarine is one. The other, Magma, is the more ancient styled with the modern touch. It will feature a jigsaw-like hull surface that resembles lava cooling down. It will also have a helipad. These are designed by French designer Sylvian Viau of SV design. Interesting.

Sting ray design ekranoplan Mobula

Mobula_1.jpg This isn’t a sting ray. It is a design for a massive, luxury transport that will be a cross connection between a cruise ship and a passenger aircraft. It is called Mobula and was designed by Chris Cooke, a 2009 graduate of Coventry University's transport design program. It is supposed to be called an ekranoplan and apparently have been in development since the cold war, and both the USSR and US military's produced a number of vehicles for both testing and potential deployment. But that dream never came true and only a small number of civilian and military ekranoplans are currently in service (I really didn’t know!).

Just like the object of their inspiration these vases spin beautifully on a spinning top. The Dancing vases are snapshots of these movements, and show how the spinning produces different shapes. Simply beautifully, these vases produced by Nylon are definitely a great piece of work. Aptly named, the Dancing Vases are truly a class apart.

Art Lebedev has once again captivated our imagination by designing the concept Navigarius GPS. The Navigarius is a round-screened concept device that will surely impress sci-fi freaks. Futuristic, it has a round touchscreen, USB, microSD, and a cigarette lighter adapter. Simply amazing, the futuristic round design has impressed me to no end. There are no plans about this unique concept going into production yet, but that doesn’t stop us from drooling and dreaming does it?

Lamp Hallo by 450 Kilo German design Studio

It lights up the room and surroundings (no pun intended). 45 Kilo, a design studio in Weimer, Germany came up with this concept of a Light Hallo. It is a reduced floor lamp and is made of powder coated steel and aluminum. It is ideal for having in homes that have strange distances between the bed and the bed stand or if you don’t have a bed stand – to read at night maybe? It was design by German designers Philipp Schöpfer and Daniel Klapsing of 45 Kilo. Very nice. Their homes must be filled with lamps, don’t you think?

Color Therapy Lamp adjustable by cell phone

color_therapy_lamp_1.jpg Cell phones are now an integral part of our lives. Even if we want to ignore it and shoo it away, it would only be for a couple of hours. So since the cell phone is so important for us, this designer thought why not use it to help in our other chores at home. Like switching on the lamp and changing its colors. This lamp is a regular white lamp which you can adjust accordingly to warm, candlelight, daylight and cold environments – using your cell phone. That is, for different activities, you can select different color shades to suit the situation. Like for example, green forests or blue oceans for relaxation, red and orange fires for creativity and romance and yellow flowers for attention. This is a design by Peter Kuhar’s Modula called Color Therapy Lamp. The company is also planning to provide an API for controlling the colors from a number of devices.
