Electrolux Design Lab 2009 rolls out top eight finalists – Care to vote?

electrolux.jpg Innovative designs and concepts help us to chart a better picture of our future. Since we have thousands of such projects floating all over blogoshpere, Electrolux invited entries for home appliance ideas for the next 90 years, in honor of the Electrolux 90-year anniversary. Out of 900 submissions from 50 countries, only eight finalists are shortlisted. Themed “Designs for the next 90 years”, the aim was to create thoughtfully-designed products that will shape how people prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes over the next nine decade. Since living green is the need of the hour, most of the designs are shaped for eco-friendly existence in the future. Every design is simply out-of-this-world and reading about them motivates me to hop on the time machine and fast forward to 90 years from today. Most of them revolve around water conservation but the one that caught my fancy the most is the Teleport Fridge by Dulyawat Wongnawa, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. His concept, “Teleport Fridge”, teleports food, eliminating the time and distance a person has to travel to buy fresh groceries or products from a store or farm. Using touch-screen technology as the interface for the teleportation process, the Teleport Fridge simply teleports food to compartments in its refrigeration and freezer units. Such a futuristic system can help to reduce or eliminate carbon footprints.

Watt Time Alarm Clock: A bright idea for a clock

blub_alarm.jpg I personally loved the light bulb-shaped Watt Time alarm clock from Quirky. Unlike a real light bulb, this alarm clock is made from high-gloss, hard plastic that illuminates the bright blue LED time display. What is more, if you hate waking up to loud sounds, you can set this alarm clock to light up when it’s time for you to wake up. All set buttons sit on the back of the bulb. A bright idea for an alarm clock, the Watt Time Alarm clock is a great alternative for an ordinary table clock. What is more, this bulb will make for a fun gift for your friends as well. The fun alarm clock is priced at $25 and available here.

“How to cook eggs”: A design concept by Martijn Boskamp

How_to_cook_eggs.jpg Some of us just lack culinary skills. Even frying that occasional omelet is an impossible task. But Dutch designer Martijn Boskamp’s design concept will surely help us get over our cooking woes, at least when it comes to eggs. His unique design concept known as “How to cook eggs” involves eggs which are individually printed with instructions for different cooking techniques. These eggs printed with instructions will surely come in handy to beginners as well as culinary skills-deprived folks. Cartola is a trash can and not a magical hat

Cartola-Trash_Can.jpg The first glance at the Cartola will make you feel that it is one of those magical hat from which a white rabbit will pop out. But sadly no rabbit will pop out from this hat, however it will definitely make your trash disappear. Cartola means top hat in Portuguese which is produced in South America.

Mobile Speakers shaped like a bag will hold your iPod

Mobile_Speakers.jpg The Mobile Speakers are probably the most ingenious designer speakers that I have come across in a long time. The most functional design for a speaker, it will surely appeal to all. Designed by Japanese artist Yoshihiko Satoh for Marumiya Furniture these speakers are shaped like a bag. What is more, the speakers actually function as a bag and hold your iPod inside. A clever design, this is one bag every music buff must definitely own. These amazing portable speakers will surely turn quite a few heads as you step out holding them in your hand.

Revolver wall light by Frank Schreiner

Revolver_60s_wall_light.jpg I personally love to decorate my home with beautiful and unique lighting pieces. Hence it is no wonder that I have fallen in love with this beautiful Revolver wall light designed by Frank Schreiner. Resembling more like a beautiful flower, the Revolver wall light is not a powerful bright light as the design may suggest. Nor is it a drain on your electricity bill as the eight chrome bulbs around the side are actually non-functioning and are used to only help the central bulb to give off light with some very distinctive shadows on the wall. The beautiful bulbs are arranged on a steel coated frame.

Möbius strip design library for Kazhakstan

Möbius_strip_library.jpg Libraries are very rare these days. Since everything is online and even eBooks have replaced the nostalgic feeling of flipping through the pages. BIG Architects has unveiled a design for a new library to be built in Astana, Kazakhstan. It will feature a twisting infinite loop designed to maximize natural lighting for the library and shading for the interior corridor. It will be called the Nursultan Nazarbayev Library which will also be a major cultural center for Astana. The basis for the design is the Möbius strip, so that the library's exterior walls form a single, never-ending loop, exposing the interior to more sunlight than in structures with windows perpendicular to the ground. This design will allow people going in to read with enhanced natural light for reading. Interesting.

Green and attractive cubicle partition

breathing-cubicle-partition.jpg Isn’t it such an obvious thing that in an office we like to have some bit of privacy and do our calmly (no, not to have perverse thoughts). Office cabins are dull, grey and boring and we all know it. Only some offices make the effort to actually put some colour into their interiors. This design is extremely cool. It is called a breathing cubicle partition. It is long and has got a small ventilation on the top that can have some plants kept on it to give it a green feel to the office. It comes in various forms and shapes.

Crazy iPhone concept for the eye

iDrops_iphone.jpg Some people are ridiculously jobless and extremely foolish. And there are others who likes to act normal but are dangerously ill. Like this dude. He has come up with an idea. It is an iPhone concept called iDrops. It is using new nano technology to control your iPhone with the blink of an eye – that’s what the ad says. It shows a person putting some drops on to the eye and then the iPhone is in your eye. I know! It makes no sense! Hilarious! Even J K Rowling had a better imagination with her wizards.

Induction Powered Vehicle by Philipp Siebourg

induction_powered_vehicle.jpg Designer Philipp Siebourg has designed a concept driverless vehicle system known as the Induction Powered Vehicle (IPV). Designed for vehicles that can’t afford to be stopped by traffic, the IPV has a magnetic track to guide the vehicle, which can also be controlled by a cellular phone. So if you are a specialty vehicle in the future, you might be able to just dial up your location and sit back and enjoy the ride. GPS would be a thing of the past if such vehicles come into being.
