The Jaguar Mark XXI: A solar powered futuristic car

Jaguar_Mark_XXI.jpg One look at the “Jaguar Mark XXI” car and you know that the future has finally arrived. This amazing futuristic car has been designed by designer Christopher Pollard. A green eco friendly car, it will surely appeal to one and all. Keeping with the Transformers mania, this car has black panels that get activated when parked. What is more, these panels are photovoltaic and lift from the car automatically to face the sun, like a sunflower. This amazing mechanism of recharging itself makes this car appear to come alive every time it recharges. The “living” panels signify “the synergy between the car’s energy replenishing function and the natural science from which it takes its inspiration. With luxurious interior to match the exquisite exteriors, this car has definitely managed to strike the right balance.

OloGun Skateboard by Surf-Rodz is rough and tough

ologun_skateboard_1.jpg Lately all the skateboards you see are made of carbon fibre or some other such lightweight material. But OloGun skateboard by Surf-Rodz goes back to its roots. It's completely blank. no fancy designs and this 72" board is made out of teak. I personally love the design as it looks quite sleek. The teak ensure that the skateboard gets ample flex and resilience. Also it features Original trucks and Seismic wheels, providing super-turning capabilities. It is for those who like to play it rough on tough terrains. It can be best described as a beautiful war machine. It comes with a unique pointed shape that is in fact a weapon of its own class. There's enough foot space too.

Bacus Boo’s wall mounted book holders

book_holder.jpg Singaporean designer Bacus Boo (yeah, that is his name, heh) has unveiled his cmart design, 1degOFF at this year SaloneSatellite in Milan. This is defined as ‘quirky yet absurd furniture that draws inspiration from the Chinese mysticism’ and consists of a 2-way usage wall-mounted bookholder available in various sizes. It is quite interesting. It is like you can have a few of them spread across your walls and instead of having one huge library from where all your guests borrow and not return your books, you can keep your favourites, up high on the wall where no one can reach them. Very smart idea, irrelevant, but still smart. Manufacturer of this design is Bomania Designworx from Singapore.

Colorful pool noodle seats in Chelsea

pool-noodle-roof.jpg The No Soul for Sale exhibition organized by X Initiative had one really interesting entry. That is the Pool Noodle Roof by Jeffrey Inaba. This colourful ensemble is situated on the roof of the old Dia space in Chelsea. The major feature of this is that it can provide both comfort and unease. Because of its intricate details and patterns, these pool noodle seats took around 750 hours to construct, 5 hours per chair. The funniest feature of this chair is that it lets out a message - 'bububluooopppp,' which is supposed to be the sound of something either sinking or rising, a commentary on the uncertain state of art and design (markets) and the world in general.

The Electrolux Volare concept tucks away a modular kitchen in a lighting system

Electrolux_Volare.jpg The future has always fascinated me. So any futuristic gadgets or concepts always manage to take my breath away. The latest futuristic concept to have impressed me is this goes by the name The Electrolux Volare. This Volare is a unique concept that is aimed at compact homes and promises to help you save a lot of space. Unlike Murphy beds or the recent transformable unit by Clei, this concept boasts of an entire kitchen tucked away inside a form that doubles up as a LED illuminated decor piece. By the press of a button this décor piece opens up to reveal an induction stove and an ice dispenser. The user can get his choice of drinks by simply gliding his fingers on this unit; the oven too will change colors according to the temperature.

Illum Chair by Damaris & Marc inspired by a female pelvis bone

Illum_Chair.jpg Damaris&Marc Design Studio from Barcelona have put forth a new concept design called the Illum Chair. It's inspired by a female human pelvis bone and I'm not sure that's a good thing. A combination of wood and plastic is used to make this strange design. On one side, you will come across a single moulded plastic including the main seat and the two front legs, while the other side features two wooden legs attached to the back of the seat as well as a backrest of the same material joining the two sides of the plastic ilium of the pelvis together. You will also find a cushion here for comfort.

Mescal Lounge chair by Mauricio Valdes: The perfect seat for a drink

mescal_lounge_chair.jpg I don’t know why, but one look at this picture and I am reminded of the green gooey mass called Flubber from the famous movie of the same name. This green structure is actually a unique lounge chair known as the Mescal chair created by Mexican designer Mauricio Valdes. Frequent visitors probably already know that Mescal is a popular drink in Mexico and a finer cousin of Tequila. The Mescal chair has been created especially to enjoy this drink and has been designed using Roto molded plastic. And what’s more, this chair even has a Flubber trait i.e. it has a very fluid form that cradles the sitter and provides arm rests.

Futuristic floors using graphic patterns

futuristic-floor-idea.jpg This is a design by Alistair Bramley. This creates futuristic graphical patterns on the floor. These are generated by people initially moving through these spaces would be used to later generate wave patterns that conform to existing paths. I don’t know what that means but it sounds cool. The thing with many brilliant ideas is that it takes a while before you discover just how unique it really is. So we shall wait for this one to reach that stage… or I shall wait. By the looks of it however it seems like something that can make your head spin, if you stare at the floor always that is.

Japanese designer blends renaissance art into fashion

renaissance_art_fashion.jpg Imagine blending the work of the real artists of the by-gone era into what is new and trendy in fashion these days. It is like a mixture of the titans rather than a clash. A Japanese graduate of Royal Academy Antwerp Yuima Nakazato has created a conceptual fashion to focus on accessories and footwear inspired by the work of Leonardo da Vinci. His designs have a complete 3-D effect to wear something arty. His designs are defined as ‘delicate metallic precision sliced to bend and flex, paradoxical body armor in shimmering gold’. He uses ‘primitive material’ for his shoes such as wooden heel, natural leather and combines it with a futuristic shape. His accessories are based on Japanese Origami, ‘where 2-D becomes 3-D, when the jewelry is worn it takes a 3-D and removed it becomes a flat shape. This is also a primitive idea of living together with technological material’.

Ventilating idea for prisons

Prison_Domes.jpg Prisons are always a nightmare. It’s as though anyone anywhere in this world have to live in filthy, claustrophobic and dark. Designer Van der Sluis felt that this had to change with his new dome for prison. It is supposedly ideal for inmates who play sports. But it is the best for inmates to feel that they are not hidden underground and give the chance for them to see beyond the walls and torn down ceilings.
